Role Overview

This position will serve as a Transportation Planning Intern for the Planning Division of the Indiana Department of Transportation. The Intern will be responsible for a variety of division projects and support. The objective of the position is to provide a valuable learning experience for the intern, as well as to assist the agency in completing their assignments and responsibilities. The Intern will report to the Central Office Technical Planning Section in Indianapolis. 

 

Hourly Rate:

The hourly wage for this position traditionally starts at $16.24 per hour for current undergraduate students and $17.24 per hour for those with an earned bachelor’s degree.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Assist Section Supervisor, Principal Planner, and Associate Planners with basic planning and GIS support services. (e.g., internet research, phone call interaction, public surveys, document reviews, routine coordination with planning partners, gathering/compiling data, data maintenance, responding to basic customer inquiries, and performing prep work for planning and public outreach meetings).
  • Work with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) datasets and technical teams for mapping and analyzing, environmental items, impacted communities, utilities, land parcels, and various assets (bridge, pavement, sound walls, roadways, and small structures).
  • Work with agency engineers, technical staff, and contracted consultants to analyze potential effects of major capacity projects on land-use, the economy; safety; the environment and traffic operations. 
  • Assist in the development of a statewide transportation alternative program and mapping of related projects (bike lanes, crosswalks, pedestrian paths, sidewalks, and other non-motorized travel attributes).
  • Assist with preliminary environmental red flag investigation analysis and project level community context audits. 
  • Assist with the development and review of various planning and technical reports. 
  • Participate and assist with facilitating public and stakeholder events across the state (some travel may be required).
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Must be working towards a degree in Urban Planning, Public Administration, Geography, Civil Engineering, or related fields.
  • Must be detail-oriented, possess strong organizational skills to manage changing and competing priorities, deadlines, and workloads.
  • Ability to work both independently and in small multi-disciplined group environments. 
  • Must be comfortable working with very large datasets/spreadsheets and able to query data and apply formulas as needed. 
  • Must have strong PC skills and experience using Microsoft Office Suite with emphasis on Excel. Microsoft Access experience is a plus.
  • Experience or training in GIS is a plus for spatial analysis activities. 
  • Must have strong written and oral communication skills. 
  • Confidence and ability to learn on the job and adapt quickly to changing circumstances. 

 

Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:

This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period.
